Bad Day / Great Week - No Time to Stall
Well, it wasn't a good showing today on National TV against Bucky who pretty-much three-bombed us to death all afternoon. Actually, they dominated us on both sides of the ball, especially with that shutdown zone defense. We hit a buzz-saw today in the form of Ohio State who proved they are amongst the best in the conference this year with Sparty and Purdue. The Buckeyes probably shot the ball as well as they have all season today. We had one of our worst shooting performances of the year. Not good.
It was just one of those days. You could say we just ran out of gas on this latest 5-game winning streak. All good things must come to an end. No shame in losing to a great team like Ohio State. Blah blah blah; one cliche after another. The final score was totally lopsided and indicative of the performnace. Ohio State shot almost 60% from beyond the arc to our 10%. That was your difference. No doubt, Ohio State signaled today they are the team to beat this year in conference.
Still, it was a great week with a stunning victory over Wisky in Madison last Tuesday night. We proved we can play with the best when we play our best. But, to fool nobody, we're still a year or two away from being an elite team again.
We'll need the time off this week to regroup after this blowout loss. We get Purdue in West Lafayette next Saturday. Obviously, we have some things work on down the stretch of conference play. While we've had some great games this year we've also had some puzzling outings - consistent with an inexperienced team.
Going forward, we have five games remaining in conference this season - including a rematch in Columbus and another at home with Wisconsin. So, we still have opportunities to differentiate the resume. Obviously, 17-9 (9-4) is still on the outside looking in on the Tourney. I don't subscribe to the theory that we've done enough to 'get in' the big dance just yet. We'll need at least two and maybe three wins to ensure our spot.
